Cold and windy weather begs for a hot drink and a good book. Some days call for tea, others coffee, but when the Christmas music begins to play, hot chocolate is my beverage of choice. While most of the time I use instant hot chocolate mix, there’s nothing like the real thing made with warm milk, cocoa, and sugar. If you’re visiting the small town of Paducah, Kentucky and craving some of the warm chocolate-y goodness, Etcetera Coffeehouse is the place to go.
A popular spot with the locals, Etcetera Coffeehouse is usually buzzing with activity on any given morning. The usual patrons range from retired book club ladies chatting over lattés to college students pounding out term papers on laptops with double espressos by their sides.
Set in the middle of Paducah’s art district, the small shop is painted in warm colors, eclectic decor, and the art of local students. In addition to supporting local artists, the shop serves organic and fair-trade coffees in an effort to be socially-conscious, making it what I call a “hipster-friendly” hangout.
For me, hot chocolate is the classic wintertime drink. Sometimes there are attempts to make it better by mixing other favors into it, like caramel or mint, but Etcetera’s hot chocolate is for the purists, having no added flavors. A perfect balance between the milk and chocolate creates a silky, milk chocolate taste without one flavor overpowering the other. A bit of sugar sweetens things up, adding the third essential element to what I consider the ideal hot chocolate.
As I’m sure you know, hot chocolate just isn’t the same without a sweet topping. Etcetera offers variety of toppings to choose from, including whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate syrup, or even festive green and red sprinkles. While it’s not the healthiest of options, I chose to top mine with whipped cream. The heat of the drink melts the white fluff, adding a creamy layer to the drink. Yum.
If hot chocolate isn’t quite your thing, you can choose from a variety of coffees, teas, and foods at Etcetera. A few of my favorite picks are the cremé bruleé latté, pomegranate tea, chai tea latte, and the bubble tea is a must-try. Though Etcetera Coffeehouse is located in the small town of Paducah, you’ll be sure to find big flavor in whichever menu items you choose!
